Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

What is HSG?

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a specialized X-ray procedure used to evaluate the interior of the uterus and the patency (openness) of the fallopian tubes. This test is essential for diagnosing potential blockages or abnormalities that can affect fertility.

How HSG Works
  1. Preparation: The procedure is usually scheduled after menstruation and before ovulation. A mild pain reliever may be recommended to minimize discomfort.
  2. Procedure: The patient lies on an X-ray table, a speculum is inserted into the vagina, and a catheter is placed through the cervix into the uterus. A contrast dye is injected through the catheter, and X-ray images are taken to visualize the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes.
  3. Results: The images help detect blockages, structural abnormalities, or scarring in the uterus and fallopian tubes. Results are reviewed to plan further treatment.
Benefits of HSG
  • Diagnosis of Tubal Blockages: Identifies blockages in the fallopian tubes, a common cause of infertility.
  • Detection of Uterine Abnormalities: Reveals abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, scar tissue, or congenital malformations.
  • Guidance for Treatment: Helps develop an effective treatment plan, potentially including surgical intervention or ART.

Sonosalpingography (SIS)

What is SIS?

Sonosalpingography (SIS), or saline infusion sonography, uses ultrasound and saline solution to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes, avoiding radiation.

How SIS Works
  1. Preparation: Scheduled after menstruation and before ovulation. A pain reliever may be advised to alleviate discomfort.
  2. Procedure: The patient lies on an examination table, a speculum is inserted, and a catheter is placed through the cervix into the uterus. Sterile saline solution is infused through the catheter, and transvaginal ultrasound is used to visualize the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes.
  3. Results: Ultrasound images provide information about the structure and function of the uterus and fallopian tubes. Results are analyzed to identify abnormalities or blockages.
Benefits of SIS
  • Non-Radiative: No radiation involved, making it a safer option for some patients.
  • Detailed Uterine Evaluation: Provides high-resolution images of the uterine cavity to identify polyps, fibroids, or other issues.
  • Assessment of Tubal Patency: Offers valuable information about the fallopian tubes, though less definitive than HSG.
Choosing Between HSG and SIS

The choice depends on the patient’s needs and medical history. HSG is preferred for detailed tubal evaluation, while SIS offers a safer profile and detailed uterine imaging.
